District Health & Wellness

A robust employee wellness plan is essential to the financial stability of Ashland School District's self funded insurance plan. Ashland School District is one of just a few public school districts in the state of Oregon that offers a self funded health insurance plan to its employees. A self-funded health plan, also known as a self-insured plan, means that Ashland School District (ASD) assumes the financial risk of providing health care benefits to its employees. Instead of paying premiums to an insurance company to cover claims, ASD sets aside funds specifically for paying employee health claims directly. The district partners with a third-party administrator to process claims, but the funds to pay for healthcare expenses come from ASD’s own budget and employee paid premiums, rather than an external insurer.

Why the Emphasis on the District's Employee Wellness Program and Prevention? Employees play a significant role in keeping health plan costs manageable by taking proactive steps to maintain their health, such as scheduling regular preventive care visits and using in-network providers when possible and participating in wellness activities. In partnership with these efforts, the district’s Health Promotions Committee works to design an employee wellness program that provides opportunities to improve health and wellness. This committee focuses on offering resources, workshops, and activities that encourage healthy lifestyles, such as fitness challenges, preventive care incentives, and mental health support.

By participating in these wellness programs, employees can proactively manage their health, which may lead to fewer medical claims over time. Preventive care, regular physical activity, and stress management are key areas that contribute to overall well-being and help reduce the likelihood of high-cost health issues. These partnered efforts between employees and the Health Promotions Committee play a vital role in supporting a healthier workforce and contribute to the financial stability of the district’s health plan.
