The Oregon Department of Education has established standards for Language Arts proficiency for grades K-8. The standards address Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

In 2016, Helman adopted Literacy By Design as our core reading program. Teachers use a variety of supplementary materials to ensure lessons are high-quality and standards-based while meeting the diverse learning needs of each student.

All students have access to iReady for individualized additional practice. Students can access iReady through Clever.com using their unique Ashland School District username and password.
