Superintendent's Message

Dear Ashland School District Staff and Community,

I started as the Interim Superintendent for the Ashland School District for the 2016-2017 school year on July 1.  Coming “home” to Ashland is a wonderful experience for Tim and me.  Some of you know we moved here from the Bay Area in 1981 in search of a smaller community with an excellent school system and a high regard for the arts.  We lived here from 1981 to 1994 during which time our four children all graduated from Ashland High School.  From 1981 to 1991 I taught elementary music at Lincoln and Walker Elementary Schools and also worked with the PCAT (Physical Cultural Arts Team) at Ashland Middle School when we moved from a junior high to a middle school model.  Our youngest daughter returned to Ashland a couple years ago so that our granddaughter could experience the same great schools that she did.  All four of our kids remain grateful for having grown up here.

It’s been amazing and heartwarming to observe the dedication of our staff this summer.  Buildings and grounds are looking great and ready for our kids to walk through the door on the first day of school.  August 29 is the first day of school for first through sixth graders (1/2 day) and new seventh and eighth graders.  At AHS, ninth graders will have a ½ day and new tenth through twelfth graders will begin their school year.  Then on August 30 all students will begin their first full day.  Be sure to go to our website for further information as we get our 2016-2017 school year started.

Each day as I drove home from the District Office this summer I passed the new Turf Field.  It was so exciting to see our athletes on the field once it was completed.  Huge kudos to Ashland Schools Foundation for that significant fund raising effort as well as their ongoing support every year.  And we always give a high five to our community for passing our YAAL – ten percent of our operating revenue.
During my one year with you as your Interim Superintendent, I look forward to getting to know you, supporting our staff and helping the Board of Directors in the search for a new and permanent superintendent.  The Board of Directors will be seeking your feedback as that process moves forward.  We will keep you updated every step of the way.

Here’s wishing each of you a satisfying and productive 2016-2017 school year.
