Science in the Courtyard

Every part of a school is a dynamic learning environment.  Parents and staff at John Muir School have worked to create a courtyard that is an outdoor science laboratory and art installation.  An organic, undulating cob wall opens to curving walkways that harbor a variety of plants and include multi-leveled habitat.  Birdhouses and feeders invite native species that become a daily part of the students' visual experience.

A recirculating creek and pond house dragonfly nymphs, native tadpoles and aquatic insects.  The school grounds become an extension of the learning environment.
