A Message from the AHS Athletic Director

Athletic Director - Karl Kemper
Teaching Life Skills through Athletics

At AHS we offer a wide variety of extra curricular athletic activities. Our purpose in providing so many opportunities is to give all of our students a chance to participate in some capacity. We believe that the sports arena is an extension of the classroom that adds an important element to a holistic education. Our coaches and staff are committed to developing the whole person. While they are involved in our programs, we will help our student-athletes learn valuable lessons that can be applied throughout their lives. We will strive to be part of the team of family members, educators, and community that assist our young people to achieve their dreams as healthy, happy, productive adults. We will work hard, play hard, and have fun as we come together to reach our full potential.

We thank the citizens of Ashland for their unparalleled belief in our programs, demonstrated by the overwhelming support of the Youth Activities Levy, the impact of which is immeasurable.

Go Grizz !!!

Karl Kemper,
Athletic Director

Karl Kemper and his wife Laurie moved to southern Oregon in 2004 with their two young sons Jordan and Jackson. They were blessed with a daughter, Alexis, in June 2007.

Karl grew up in Banks, Oregon, where he participated in a wide variety of sports. He graduated from Eastern Oregon State College in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health. He then attended the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama, where he earned his Master of Science in Sport Management in 1990. He has also done post graduate work at Portland State University, where he completed his Special Education credential in 2000. He earned his Educational Administrative License from Concordia University in 2003.

He spent ten years in the Forest Grove School District working as a teacher of special education, health, and PE. He has twelve years coaching experience, primarily in baseball, basketball, and football. He has also spent fifteen summers working a variety of camps in all areas of activity. He has an extensive background in aquatic activities and adapted PE instruction.

Karl’s passion is to help all students find fitness for life activities in which they can be successful. The purpose of the programs that he directs is to teach life skills through athletics. His motto is “Attitude is everything!” He believes that it’s always a great day to be a Grizzly!
