Cheer 2010
Cheer 2010

Congratulations AHS Varsity Cheerleaders!

The AHS cheerleaders attend the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) summer camp July 12th-15th, 2010. The camp was held at Southern Oregon University and attracted cheerleaders from Oregon as well as Northern California.

The Ashland High School Cheerleaders received the following awards at NCA summer camp:

The Herkie Team Award – This award is named after the founder of NCA and is awarded to the squads who exemplify the qualities upon which NCA was founded. These qualities are leadership, values, teamwork and sportsmanship. This award is chosen by the NCA staff and is only given to 1 team who exemplifies these qualities throughout the entire camp. AHS has won this award 4 years in a row.

National Championship Bid Winner – This tremendous accomplishment is awarded to the team Bid Winner exemplifying the best technical skill and cheerleader technique. The bid is extended to teams to compete at the NCA High School National Championship held in Dallas, Texas.

Champion Chant – Teams compete with a chant that they learned during the week. Technical skills, as well as the ability to lead the crowd, are judged to select the winner.

Spirit Stick Winner – Presented to the squad showing the most sincere spirit and enthusiasm throughout the entire week at camp. AHS was presented with a spirit stick all 4 days and actually earned the honor of the special super sized spirit stick on the 2nd day.

S.P.O.T. – The NCA S.P.O.T award is presented for displaying excellent skills in spotting and stunt technique. This award is given to teams that keep safety the #1 priority.

Technical Excellence – This award is given for displaying superior skills and proper technique in stunting during the NCA evaluation.

Superior ribbon – The superior ribbon is the highest ribbon given for excellence in all areas during NCA evaluation. AHS received superior ribbons for both the cheer and chant portion of their evaluations.

In addition to team awards, several individuals were recognized as well

All American Nominee’s are outstanding individuals who display strength in one or more of the following categories: motions, jumps, stunts, tumbling, dance or leadership.

Caytie Siegl – All American Nominee: Dance

Jordan Elizondo - All American Nominee: Dance

Derrien Burns - All American Nominee: Leadership – Derrien was also awarded the Excellence in Leadership Award which is awarded to the Captain that displays the strongest leadership during “captain’s classes” and throughout camp. This award is only given to 1 individual and is chosen by the NCA camp instructors.

Olivia Bacon - All American Nominee: Jumps – Olivia was chosen as an All-American Team Member which is the most prestigious award in cheerleading today. Participants vying for All-American status are judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection and overall crowd appeal. These members are eligible to perform at various NCA special events. Olivia was also chosen as the NCA Top All-American which is awarded to the highest scoring All-American Team Member at camp. Olivia was also asked by the lead staff member to apply to become a member of the NCA staff next summer.

5 cheerleaders were chosen this year at NCA camp by the staff that represented everything that a cheerleader should be. These cheerleaders were awarded with 2 small pins recognizing their excellence and were asked to then chose 1 person at that camp who they felt also deserved that honor. Out of the 5 chosen by NCA staff, 3 of them were on the AHS cheer team. Those 3 girls are Olivia Bacon, Jordan Elizondo, and Derrien Burns.

Congratulations AHS Cheerleaders!
