Introduction of Special Programs, Activities and Annual Events

Friday LEGO Club

Join the fun and participate in the after school LEGO club, Fridays, 2:45 - 3:45 in the Cafeteria. Parent help is encouraged and welcome. Notification for start dates will be sent out electronically, but this is generally a club that meets during the winter months. Open to grades 1-5. LEGO donations needed and appreciated. Start date is scheduled for January, 2013 through March.

Organized Sports 

Helman 4th and 5th graders can participate in seasonal sports. Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, and Track and Field are lead each year by Jim Hagemann. Students are taught basic skills and sportsmanship in a balanced cooperative and competitive environment.  The end of the Track and Field season brings the district wide Annual Elementary Track and Field meet.  This highly organized fun event is hosted by Ashland High School.

Science Fair

Helman's PTA sponsors this annual event.  Students explore science as they compare, research and analyze scientific processes and how it relates to their environment. Students share their learning with a panel of experts - all students who participate receive a special Science Fair button and ribbon.

 

 

 

Kinder Explorers

 

Kindergarten after school day care privately run on campus for kindergarten children. Activities include lunch, games, puzzles, crafts, stories, and art projects. New hours: 11:45 until 5:30 pm if needed. Contact Kari Smith at Helman.Explorers@gmail.com

After school privately run day care for children grades 1 - 5. Children are engaged in art activities, games, crafts, puzzles, and many other exciting activities offered from 2:45 - 5:30 pm. Contact: Kari Smith.

Climbing Wall

The newly installed climbing wall in the Helman gym provides children the opportunity to learn about this new exciting sport while gaining and enhancing physical fitness. All activities with the climbing wall are supervised by our PE instructor. Contact, Jim Hagemann at 482-5620.

 

PTA Hoedown

PTA Sponsored dinner/fundraiser. No charge to families. Student Art Work Displays/Cake Walk/Live Music. This event is for Helman families. This fabulous and fun event will be held September 13, 2013. Hope to see you there!

Site Council

Site Council meets every third Monday in the conference room from 3 - 4:15. Meetings are open to the public. Minutes are posted to the website. Council members include: Chair: Christopher Moore, Leslie Gore, Stacy Shaver, Deltra Ferguson, Traber Burns, Weatherly Oaks, Mary Snowden, Berit Larson, Glenna Stiles, Berne Sanchez, Daniel Cazares.

 PTA Meetings

PTA meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the Helman library. All parents are encouraged to join for $10.50 a year membership and attend meetings. Child care is provided at no charge. PTA is a robust group of parents and teachers who work diligently to provide support to children, families and the classroom.

 

Soroptimist Strong Girls, Strong Women

Sponsored by Soroptimist International of Ashland, girls in grades 4 - 5 have the opportunity to participate in after school hands on Science/Math Classes beginning in September. Girls in grades 2 - 3- 4 - 5 are encouraged to participate in a lunch buddy program once a month during lunch. Kindergarten and grade 1 girls will receive books for their home libraries. During winter, 4/5 grade girls take a variety of field trips to businesses and careers operated or owned by women in our valley. Spring Science classes take on stewardship projects out in the surrounding environment. This Soroptimist Signature project is designed to support girls as they move through their elementary experience and foster life long education through college.  A family dinner for all girls who participate in the after school classes, lunch buddy and book projects will be held at no charge to families on November 8 from 6:00 - 7:00pm. Girls will present examples of activities from the math/science classes. Background checks are required for all adults in the lunch buddy program.

Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad is looking for a director to take over the after school program this year. Please contact Glenna Stiles at 541-482-5620 if you are interested in heading up this group.
