ASHLAND SCHOOL BOARD RELEASES BLACK LIVES MATTER RESOLUTION
Ashland School District is proud to share that on Monday, November 9th, 2020, the Ashland School Board passed a resolution supporting Black Lives Matter (BLM). Click here for District EDI page. BLM resolution acknowledges the systemic barriers that exist for Black students in our schools, our community and our country. The resolution is an important step in addressing issues of equity and inclusivity now and as we work to educate future citizens and leaders for a bright and just future for all.
The Black Lives Matter resolution follows the District’s Equity Policy enacted on June 10, 2019. The resolution and equity policy provide direction for the ongoing work of the District in acknowledging and addressing the role that racial disparities play in achieving equity and inclusive education opportunities for all students. The District has included a Black Lives Matter message on school leader boards since May, 2020, as a response to the systemic issues that continue to result in tragic racial bias incidents across the country.
Ashland School District has formed an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Steering Committee that will provide a strategic approach to the challenges of equity and inclusion in our schools. The work of the Steering Committee will support the vision of the District’s equity policy and promote the Black Lives Matter resolution. The Steering Committee will work with schools to promote effective practices and evaluate progress using student measures. The committee is chaired by Andrea Townsend, Director of Equity and Inclusion, and has members from each school.
On December 16, 2020, the Ashland School Board is set to enact the All Students Belong policy that will address consequences for the use of specific hate symbols and establish a process for student-on-student bias incidents in accordance with Oregon Administrative Regulation OAR 581-022-2312. The Ashland bias incident process will promote education and restorative justice wherever feasible.
The recent shooting of a former Ashland High School student, Aidan Ellison, a young Black man, on November 23, 2020, is a reminder of the importance of working for a more equitable and just community through education.
In October, the Oregon Department of Education released two important documents, a Black Lives Matter Resolution and a Joint Letter of Support for Black Lives Matter that support schools throughout Oregon in addressing issues of systemic racism and injustice.
